Yes this is true which is why you MUST be aware and separate the males and females. The males are not aware and will just keep mating regardless of whether their offspring survive or not because the mother is too exhausted etc....

Yeah it is important to know as your three can quickly turn into 7. Male guinea pigs will mate as soon as the female has given birth and keep mating. So before you know it you will have another few and they can have up to four at a time. If they have too many usually some don't survive....
