I bought two guinea pigs from a pet store and the sales assistant insisted they were both girls... so it was quite a surprise when I saw three little versions running around in the cage one day. I kept them, they were just too cute to give away, but now I have to get bigger cages etc. Least now I can tell what sex they are in future

Yeah it is important to know as your three can quickly turn into 7. Male guinea pigs will mate as soon as the female has given birth and keep mating. So before you know it you will have another few and they can have up to four at a time. If they have too many usually some don't survive.

Yes this is true which is why you MUST be aware and separate the males and females. The males are not aware and will just keep mating regardless of whether their offspring survive or not because the mother is too exhausted etc.

I agree people aren't careful about the gender and the pet shop people are the worst because if it is your first time buying a piggie then it is very misleading I know of quite a few friends who have got them mixed up luckily not me though but I understand that it can be really anoying!
