Appearance:
The Indian Ringneck, is a medium-sized bird with a hooked beak and long tail. On average these birds are 14-16" inches (~40 cm) in length and up to 7 of these inches can be tail feather alone. Their average weight is 115 g or 4.1 oz and their plumage is generally apple green. Many other colours also exist as they are mutations of the original colour. These colours include buttercup yellow, powder blue, grey and albino.
Diet:
In the wild, Indian Ringneck Parakeets eat a variety of seeds, berries, fruits, nuts, blossoms, and nectar. In addition to these foods, you can offer them vegetables and commercial pellets. They also enjoy the same nutritional foods humans eat, including cooked chicken. Cooked beans, rice, and grains are also enjoyed, but soft foods like these will spoil in about 4 hours. An occasional millet spray is a nice treat. Fresh food and water must be provided daily.
Temperament:
Although the Indian Ringneck has something of a reputation for being nippy and uneasy to tame, it is largely undeserved. Because they are so smart, Ringnecks get bored very easily, and will often resort to chewing and other destructive behavior if left to their own devices. They also go through a bluffing stage during adolescence that is difficult for some owners to manage. Ringnecks that are handled often and properly cared for, however, generally have sweet, charming personalities that make them a favorite of bird enthusiasts everywhere. However the Indian Ringneck at some times, can be jealous of other family members and pets. They can develop a bond with only one human and refuse to interact with other people.
